Richard Le Bargy fell seriously ill at the end of March this year and was rushed into A&E and then ICU where he underwent a tracheotomy. He was given a 50/50 chance of survival.
‘This was uncomfortable and meant that I was unable to eat, drink or speak, however it did mean that I could breathe,’ he said.
‘It was probably at this point that I started to realise that I was experiencing the amazing dedication and professionalism of the people that were caring for me 24/7.
‘The humour and positivity of these nurses and doctors encouraged me to believe that at some point I would pull through.
‘This may sound strange but at times I felt I was on a bus that was being driven by these girls and boys and that they were taking me to a better place, a place of well-being and recovery.
‘I cannot really put into words what the staff of the ICU mean to me.
‘They are all amazing people who go to extraordinary lengths to tend and nurse back to health the many patients in their care.
‘When we use words like “angels”, some of us will know exactly what that means because that is what they are.
‘When I am not in their care I wonder if they go back to heaven awaiting the time to come back again and look after me.’
