Pride of Guernsey: Sam Proudlove-Gains

A YOUNG boy’s spirit, patience and good humour since being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia is testament to his bravery and the amazing support of his family.

Sam Proudlove-Gains, 12, was diagnosed last November and his nominator for the Close Finance-sponsored Overcoming Adversity award, Carol Pearson, said the way he has coped with that has been truly admirable.
‘He has shown an amazing amount of spirit, guts, patience and overwhelming good humour,’ she said.
‘He has had a number of rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant in Bristol which is looking successful. We are all hoping he will be home soon [from Southampton].’
‘For a child to cope with this illness as well as Sam is admirable, but to manage all of this so well and be away from Guernsey for such a long time deserves recognition.
‘Sam’s dad, Martin, works as a member of my team at the PEH and as a team we wished to nominate Sam for this award as we have witnessed and heard about his journey every day since his diagnosis.
‘Sam has been amazingly well supported by his parents and their partners, Kat and Andy.
‘His mum, Helen, has stayed with him throughout his treatment in Southampton and the other three have visited very regularly.
‘They have all shown such fortitude during such a difficult time.’
